Why Expletives?: A Cross-Linguistic Perspective

本発表では (1) の解決を目指し一般化 (2) を提出した．(2) は普遍的な句構造 (3) と主要部パラメタ (4) 及び SOV 言語が [FHP] を持つことを仮定すると，SOV 言語の TP の指定部は (5) のように VPmax が占めるため虚辞は生起し得ないと原理的に説明される.

Given the universal underlying word order S-H-C, the head parameter can be reduced to the presence or absence of [FHP] in the functional head, where [FHP] is a strong feature to trigger movement of a complement.
