英語の前置詞の意味と倒置構文

英語の to 句と into 句は，ともに着点を表す．または event に delimitedness を与える，としてこれまでひとまとめに扱われることが多かった．しかし，Into this room ran a number of boys. と ?? To this room ran a number of boys. のような Locative Inversion における文法性の差を見ると，to と into には何らかの違いがあると考えられる．
本研究では，to 句と into 句の語彙情報の違いを，Pustejovsky (1995) の event structure 内の headedness の違いで捉えることを提案した．Pustejovsky は，into は process と state という２つの event からなり，event2 である．state が head であると考えている．一方，to の場合，John ran to the station for ten minutes. The toruists came to a stream for an hour. がそれぞれ「10分間走った」， 「１時間歩いた」という解釈を持ち，文の head には動詞の head が反映されている．そこで，本研究では，to は process と state という２つの event からなるが，head は Underspecified であると主張した．
