Martin (1996) presents an analysis of control that, following Williams (1980), classifies it into two types, OC and NOC, the latter arising only in infinitivals that can appear with lexical subjects. Landau (2000), on the other hand, classifies all complement infinitivals as involving OC, which he divides into two subtypes, exhaustive control (EC) and partial control (PC), and argues that PC arises only in [+Tense] infinitivals, contra Martin’s claim that all control infinitivals are [+Tense]. In this paper, I will compare these two approaches to classification and analysis of control and present a number of arguments in favor of Martin 1996.
