Avoid Empties and Syllabification

Archangeli (1984) 等によって理論の大綱が示された Underspecification Theory (最少指定理論)は,基底表示において余剰な情報を一切取払うことを主張する。これによって,表示も規則の定式化もそれまでの枠組に較べて格段に簡素化された。 Underspecification の下では,最小限に指定された基底表示の空白部分を埋めていって表層へと導く際,(1) の左半分の手立てが援用される。

高橋 (1988b, c) では,これを全て Avoid Empties (2) という原理一本に包摂することが,分節素のレベルで可能であることを論じた。
